Generally the biggest dilemma that faces any web site owner is how to increase traffic to their website for free. Many a site owner has fallen by the wayside using PPC or other paid methods. There is a method, however, that has been and will be for the foreseeable future an effective means to increase traffic to website free.

The method is called Article Marketing. As you are reading this, you may recognize the term or, in fact, have already tried it or are using it now. But there is indeed a right way and a wrong way to go about it. Here are the steps you need to focus on to ensure your success.

Keyword Research – Your site resides in a niche of some sort, whether it be sports, real estate, health and fitness…whatever. You need to research terms that you feel a customer would use to find a site in your industry. One of the best free tools for doing this is the Google Keyword Tool (just Google that and you will find it). Enter in a keyword phrase and it will list the monthly searches for each term on Google. This will give you an idea of what is actually being used for search terms in your industry.

Build Your Keyword List – Once you have some terms from the GKT, do a regular Google search, but put your keyword phrase in quotes. Find phrases that return around 10k results, somewhere in that ballpark. You may also want to do an intitle: search to see what results come back that have your exact keyword phrase in the title. The fewer results that come back, the better.

These terms that fit these criteria will have fewer searches, but it will be easier for you to get on the first page of Google, which is clearly the goal here. 50-100 articles using lower volume keywords that get you on the first page are much more useful than 10-20 that can’t climb past page 3 for more competitive phrases.

Put Your Keyword Phrase in the Title – OK, now it is time to start putting together your article, and this is also where a lot of people get it wrong. You want to ensure that you write an article of no less than 400 words. Typically the ones that I do are in the range of 450-700 depending on the topic. You first want to place your phrase in the title. Using this article as an example, the keyword phrase this article is built around is “increase traffic to website free.” You will notice it is the first phrase that you see in the title.

Put Your Keyword Phrase in The First Paragraph – The next place you will want to put your keyword phrase is somewhere in the first paragraph. The closer you can place it to the front of your article the better and in this particular article, you will see I actually included it in two variations.

Put Your Keyword Phrase in Your Resource Box – This is where so many inexperienced article marketers get it wrong. It is important to place your keyword phrase in your resource box as a link back to your site. Too often you see guys putting “click here for more info” or phrases similar to that. Using your keyword phrase as a link tells the search engines that it is a term relevant to your particular site and your site’s ranking will as a result improve related to it.

Submit Your Article – There are tons of free article directories that exist out there today, but I personally like to use at least EZine Articles, Articles Base, GoArticles, Article Alley, Article Dashboard, Easy Articles, and Buzzle for all my submissions. EZine Articles is the most popular for article marketers, but be aware that you will be put on a 10 article trial by them and there is no guarantee that your article will meet there quality standards. That site can take some practice, but the returns are worth it.
